The Extended Warranty Manager knocks out enough PowerBook 170 screen pixels to encourage Apple to honor its warranty “against defects in materials and workmanship.”

According to Apple’s toll-free repair hotline for your Macintosh PowerBook computers (1-800-SOS-APPL), Apple’s policy is to replace PowerBook 170 screens under any of three conditions:
1) There are one or more defective pixels that are always black
2) There are five or more defective pixels that are always white
3) There are two or more defective pixels within one inch that are always white
Yet “Apple’s One-Year Limited Warranty” included with each PowerBook 170 says:
Apple Computer, Inc. (“Apple”) warrants this hardware product against defects in materials and workmanship for a period of ONE (1) YEAR from the date of original retail purchase.
If you discover a defect, Apple will, at its option, repair, replace, or refund the purchase price of this product at no charge to you, provided you return it during the warranty period, with transportation charges prepaid, to the authorized dealer from whom you purchased it or to any other authorized Apple dealer within the country of original retail purchase. …
And “Getting Started with your Macintosh® PowerBook™ 140/170” (page 20, Technical Information) says the specification for the PowerBook 170 screen is:

That’s 256,000 pixels! Not 255, 999! Not 255, 998! Not 255, 997! And not even 255, 996!
So… a PowerBook with less than the specified 256,000 pixels has defects and is covered under Apple’s repair-or-replace warranty. We know that Apple will see things our (the customer’s) way soon and honor their warranty.
How it Works:
Extended Warranty Manager is the first program to use Proprietary Stealth Technology to temporarily install itself into your PowerBook 170 without being detected. It cannot be disabled by restarting, by using any INIT/Extension managers, by re-installing the System software, or by booting from another disk or a floppy. It “fixes” the pixels as soon as PowerBook starts to boot. Yes, this is a frightening stuff! In the wrong hands Proprietary Stealth Technology could be very dangerous. In fact, the source code has been classified to prevent such an occurrence.
Using Extended Warranty Manager:
Extended Warranty Manager will only work on a PowerBook 170. It does nothing (except beep) on other Macintosh models. It should only be used on PowerBook 170s containing data that can be replaced.
Double-click the application to run it.
Select “One Black Pixel” to install the Extended Warranty Manager and make one pixel black in the menu bar. Restart to see the effects.
Select “Five White Pixels” to install the Extended Warranty Manager and make five pixels on the screen white. Restart to see the effects.
Select “Uninstall” to remove the Extended Warranty Manager. Restart to see the effects.
Select “NOT!!!” to quit without changing anything.
